Top 3 Areas to spend your spring decorating budget

Top 3 areas to spend your spring decorating budget.

Spring is here and summer is fast approaching. Take a look at where you should spend your spring decorating  budget to get the best bang for your buck.
1. Kitchen: The kitchen is the center of many homes and when deciding to remodel or update, ensure the changes work for your lifestyle. Plan your kitchen out in major zones, for example: food-prep zone, cooking zone, storage zone, etc. The time you take to thoroughly plan the use of your kitchen the more time and steps it will save you in the end. If you have the budget go the custom kitchen route which will allow you to customize just about anything from cabinet sizes and heights, to finishes and endless storage and accessory options all at a reasonable cost.
For the contemporary minimalistic look, use a slab door available in many styles and finishes, add a simple quartz or granite countertop and finish off the look with glass backsplash, stainless steel appliances and fixtures. For the Modern Kitchen and for a warmer look opt for a shaker style door, flat panel door or even a simple raised panel. Select a granite countertop that compliments the cabinets and use a mixture of marble, stone and glass tile as your backslash. Lastly, don't skimp on the lighting use a combination of ambient light, task and accent lighting as it improves your kitchens function and its looks.

2. Entry/ Foyer: First impressions are the ones that count and the foyer is one area that often gets neglected. Simple updates could have your guests singing praises when they first enter your home. Start by replacing the entrance door or add a sidelight or glass transom where feasible, which will allow a constant stream of light to enter your home or opt to paint your existing door a bold colour and don't stop on the exterior side continue the colour through to the interior side as well. Often underestimated lighting can dramatically change the look and feel of your entrance. Install a statement light fixture, whether it be a chandelier, pendant or surface mounted fixture which will not only give you the ambient lighting needed during the evening hours but will also add to the overall feel. Replace the flooring if possible and incorporate a detailed floor inlay or spread a graphic rug or runner to define the entrance. Lastly, some good old fashioned paint, select a light neutral colour to keep the space bright and welcoming.

3. Powder Room: Like the foyer the powder room is another area that gets left to the list of things to do but should be on the top of your list. The powder room is a place for your guests and it should be better than average. Create a calming oasis by maintaining a neutral colour pallet and incorporating natural and organic elements such as wood, cork and stone for a modern and nature inspired feel. Keep the fixtures white for a crisp, clean look and coordinate your faucet and lighting finishes. Chrome and stainless steel accents are always popular but brass is also making a comeback and looks stunning when paired with modern elements. Create drama when designing your lighting plan and incorporate different sources of light. Install wall sconces at either side of a large mirror in addition to the central ceiling fixture and put it on a dimmer switch to create a sultry evening mood when entertaining. Allow for recessed potlights to illuminate a piece of artwork, or a beautiful sink basin which will create another layer of lighting and add to the visual interest within the space. This is a generally a small space so don't be afraid to have fun with it but keep it simple and cohesive.

What's in a name? A Paint name that is!

So long are the days where the words "red", "blue" or "green" are used to describe the actual colour.
With so many variations of a single colour from bright and saturated hues to muted tones, how can paint companies help but not get creative with playful and interesting names to describe their perfect shade.

Para Paints is one manufacturer who is using interesting names, many of them phrases to describe their paint. Names such as, "DUDE!" to describe a light blue shade versus Benjamin Moore' "Ice Blue"  and "Pop, Lock and Drop" a popular pop dance term to describe a beige tone. The names are anything but boring and if you're not excited about colour after going through their fan deck I don't know what will excite you.

Colour is supposed to be fun, inspiring and bring a sense of energy to a space and these names definitely reflect just that.  Take a look at a few of our favourite names below:

See if you can match the names with the actual colour!

Pantone Colour of the year 17-5641 Emerald

As you may have heard by now, Pantone's Colour of the Year is 17-5641 Emerald and inspiration for this jewel tone seems to be popping up everywhere.

Over the holidays, while shelling pistachios for a chocolate treat, I was inspired by its beauty and its array of vivid and jewel like tones and had to whip out my camera and take a few shots. As a designer, I'm inspired everyday by all things that surround me, this one really excited me because of how beautifully the colors blended together and especially knowing this years colour. While putting together a colour scheme inspired by my chocolate treat, I had a sense of energy and life and could imagine how well the bold colours would play off of each other. I definitely think when designing with this colour you gotta go bold or go home. Mixing in other rich tones whether it be fabrics or accessories will compliment the already luxurious colour and certainly make an elegant statement. Its bold, its rich and It's definitely not for the colour challenged.

Take a look at some inspiration images featuring "Emerald" I love below.

Classically Inspired Kitchen-Countertops

When selecting new countertops it's important to weigh all your options and get the features and benefits of each surface in order to decide which is most suitable for your lifestyle. For this project in particular, we specified quartz countertops because of its low maintenance properties. Quartz Countertops are made from 93% Quartz and the remaining 7% is made up of other resins and glass, it's essentially a man made stone. The benefits of using quartz is that it's a non-porous material, meaning you don't have to seal it every couple of years like you would granite or marble. It's also stain resistant, scratch resistant, and heat resistant. One of the things I also love about this product is that the consistency of the grain in the overall slab.

For this project, Caesarstones Oyster 9601 was the stone of choice.

There are many quartz manufacturers on the market, when selecting a quartz surface the process in which the stone is prepared is similar from manufacturer to manufacturer, the main difference is the selection of colours and finishes, also there are a few manufacturers who offer jumbo size slabs to be used for large islands. It's very important to do all your research before you commit to just one type of stone.

Holiday Apple Tarts

It's quite amazing at how much of a sweet tooth I have and it seems to get worse right around the holidays.

This is a quick and simple holiday tart I make for my friends and family and I have to admit, they're dangerously delicious!!

Ingredients:
Puff or Phyllo pastry
2 large apples-I like Granny Smith
1/2 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Unsalted butter

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and apply a generous amount of butter.

Cut the pastry into equal 3 1/2" circles and place on a cookie sheet.

Slice butter into equal slices, and place in the center of your pastry. You can adjust the amount of butter to suit the desired flavour.

Mix the sugar and cinnamon together and sprinkle generously on top the pastry and butter.

Cut apples into halves and cut again into thin slices. Apply apples to the pastry in a circular direction starting with the larger apples on the bottom and ending with the smaller pieces on the top.

Apply another chunk of butter on top of the apples and sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Heat oven at 375 degrees and bake for approx. 30 minutes or until apples are cooked and pastry is golden brown.

Makes 8 Tarts

Enjoy! Happy Baking.....and Eating!
